Collection: Home Décor | Ceramics

Ceramics bring together useful objects and decorative forms, with character shaped by clay, glaze, surface treatment and the way a piece was made. A sculptural vase, a small animal figure or a simply proportioned bowl can each offer a different expression of the material. Regional histories provide useful context without reducing the work to a single national style.

This collection is a starting point for exploring American, Asian, Australian, Dutch, German, Italian and Nordic/Scandinavian ceramics. Each grouping encompasses different workshops, manufacturers and periods, with ideas and techniques often travelling between them.

Earthenware, stoneware and porcelain are distinct ceramic bodies, rather than interchangeable descriptions for any glazed object. The body, glaze and decoration are also separate parts of a design: a maker may reuse a shape with different finishes, or apply one decorative pattern to several forms. These distinctions help explain both the variety within a range and the relationships between pieces.

When choosing a piece, consider its proportions, surface and decorative detail alongside the available information about manufacture and condition. A regional attribution does not always identify a particular factory or designer. Individual listings retain that distinction where the surviving evidence does not support a more precise name.
