Porcelain (aka porzellan) and Germany have a long history, with some successful manufacturers still in production today, producing classic and timeless porcelain pieces.

Across the mid-century era however porcelain production boomed, with a number of players hitting the market, flooding consumers with an extensive range of products.

Company Rosenthal

Rosenthal was founded in 1879 by Philipp Rosenthal as a porcelain painting workshop in Erkersreuth, Bavaria, Germany, before expanding into full-scale manufacturing at Selb in 1889. The company established itself as a global leader in high-end luxury tableware and art ceramics by continuously acquiring rival factories and collaborating with prestigious designers.

In 1961, Philip Rosenthal (son of the founder) launched the Rosenthal Studio-Line (studio-linie), a dedicated design division that partnered with over 150 world-renowned modern artists, architects, and designers — including Bjørn Wiinblad, Tapio Wirkkala, Walter Gropius, and Andy Warhol — to produce avant-century, museum-quality porcelain wares.

Following financial restructuring in the late 20th century, the brand was acquired by the Italian group Sambonet Paderno in 2009 and continues production in upper Franconia as a premier international design brand.
