Collection: Glass | Nordic/Scandinavian

Nordic glass brings together several distinct national design histories. Scandinavia usually refers to Denmark, Norway and Sweden, while the broader Nordic region also includes Finland and Iceland, along with associated territories. The combined heading is useful for browsing, but it should not obscure the individual identities of the countries, glassworks and designers involved.

Twentieth-century Swedish glass gained international recognition for carefully considered form and workmanship. Later designers, including Erik Höglund and Bengt Edenfalk, explored freer and more personal expression within the glass industry. This variety challenges the idea that all Scandinavian glass is restrained, colourless or uniformly minimalist.

Finnish glass history likewise includes much more than individually designed art objects. Bottles, pressed glass and polished crystal formed part of a diverse industry alongside serially manufactured design and art glass. Danish glassmaking adds its own factory and designer histories, rather than simply repeating a shared northern European style.

For collectors, country, manufacturer, designer and range are separate pieces of information. A clean outline, textured surface or particular colour may be associated with Nordic design without proving a Nordic origin. Individual listings provide the more specific attribution where it is supported, rather than assigning a maker solely from a general aesthetic.
