Crown Crystal Glass (Australia)
Operating primarily out of Sydney, Crown Crystal Glass was established in 1926 following the amalgamation of several local glassworks. As a subsidiary of the Australian Glass Manufacturers Company, it quickly grew to become the largest and most successful manufacturer of domestic glassware in Australia throughout the 20th century. While initially known for its early pressed depression glass and highly collectible carnival glass (which featured Australian flora and fauna motifs like kookaburras, emus, and waratahs) the company continually evolved its output to meet modern tastes.
During the early mid-century period, Crown Crystal produced vast catalogues of award-winning, contemporary glass tableware that can still be found in many Australian households today. Their designs ranged from heavy, cut-crystal pieces to sleek, modern drinking suites. The company's high manufacturing standards also sparked a successful export drive, sending their Australian-made glass across the globe to compete in markets throughout the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and even Scandinavia - a region already renowned for its own world-class glass production.
For many collectors however, Crown Crystal Glass is perhaps most famous for bringing a kitchen icon to the Southern Hemisphere. From the early 1930s onwards, the company was the sole manufacturer of Australian-made PYREX. Originally marketed under the 'AGEE' brand (derived from the initials for Australian Glass) and later as 'Crown Pyrex,' they produced heat-resistant casserole dishes, ramekins, and mixing bowls in locally designed mid-century patterns.
