Originally operating as a Swedish iron foundry, Alsterfors transitioned to glassmaking in 1885 when the facility was purchased by J. A. Gottwald Fogelberg, a former manager at the prestigious Kosta glassworks. The factory officially joined the Association of Swedish Crystal Manufacturers in 1903, navigating several ownership changes and evolving design trends throughout the 20th century.

While the kiln hosted a number of notable Scandinavian designers over the decades including Edvin Ollers (1930-1934), Ingrid Atterberg (1958-1964), and Fabian Lundkvist, it experienced a massive mid-century renaissance under the direction of Per Olof Ström (1968-1972). Ström completely transformed the factory's output, designing the heavy, architectural, and vibrantly coloured pop-art glass that makes late-1960s Alsterfors highly sought after by vintage collectors today.

Although the factory ultimately ceased production in 1980, its pieces remain highly collectible, often authenticated by their distinct, geometric forms and surviving silver foil labels.
