Founded in 1793 in the municipality of Urjala, Nuutajärvi Notsjö is Finland’s oldest glassworks and a cornerstone of Nordic glassmaking history. Carrying both its Finnish (Nuutajärvi) and historical Swedish (Notsjö) names, the factory originally produced window panes and bottles before recruiting European glassblowers in the mid-19th century to master pressed, blown, and filigrana techniques. By the post-war era, the glassworks had evolved into an internationally celebrated studio, renowned for blending traditional mouth-blown craftsmanship with bold, modernist experimentation in colour and form.
Nuutajärvi’s golden age in the mid-20th century was defined by visionary artistic directors and designers who shaped the global identity of Finnish design. Under the creative leadership of figures like Gunnel Nyman, Kaj Franck, Saara Hopea, and Oiva Toikka, the glassworks produced everything from minimalist, functional everyday tableware to intricate sommerso vases and Toikka’s iconic mouth-blown glass birds. Although Nuutajärvi merged with Iittala in 1988, vintage pieces bearing the Nuutajärvi Notsjö signature or foil label remain highly prized by collectors worldwide as enduring artefacts of mid-century Scandinavian artistry.
