Founded in 1909 by Johann Übelacker in Ransbach-Baumbach, Ü-Keramik (Übelacker Keramik) originally operated as a metal foundry before expanding into earthenware and glazed ceramics. The company experienced significant growth in the 1950s under the management of Übelacker’s three sons, becoming a major West German exporter.
A defining moment for the factory occurred in 1954 when art director Heinz Hommerich developed a vibrant fire-red selenium glaze, which became one of the first mass-produced glazes of its kind in the country and a hallmark of the brand alongside their distinctive chimney vases.
Despite earlier successes and expansions, including the establishment of Kilrush Ceramics in Ireland, the main Ransbach-Baumbach factory filed for bankruptcy in 1990.
