STOFF Nagel

STOFF Nagel is a Danish design brand best known for reviving the modular Nagel candle holder. Although its modern chapter began in 2015, the design originated in Cologne, Germany, through the collaboration of Hans Nagel and architect and artist Werner Stoff.

According to the brand’s history, the idea began during a skiing holiday in the Alps. After a fall left three finger holes in the snow, Nagel imagined a sculptural holder for three slender candles and asked Stoff to develop the design. Launched in the late 1960s, the resulting three-legged form became the foundation of an interconnecting system.

Its distinctive appeal lies in that modular construction. Individual holders can be used alone or combined into larger arrangements, allowing the owner to build and reshape a personal sculpture. The design works as both a functional candle holder and a decorative object, with its appearance changing as pieces are added or rearranged.

In 2015, the Danish company relaunched the candle holder in chrome using Werner Stoff’s original drawings. Solid brass followed in 2016 and a black edition in 2017, bringing the original design to a new generation.
