Scheurich was founded in 1928 by Alois Scheurich and his cousin Fridolin Greulich. The company initially operated in Schneeberg as a wholesale distributor of glass, porcelain, and ceramics under the name Scheurich & Greulich. Following a relocation to Kleinheubach, the business began its own household ceramic production in 1948 and eventually opened a dedicated ceramics factory in 1954. This transition established Scheurich as a dominant force in the West German pottery market. With the arrival of designer Heinz Siery in 1955, the company developed highly efficient production methods and introduced many of the iconic mid-century shapes that defined its early success.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Scheurich became renowned for its vast output, producing an extensive catalogue of moulded forms characterised by bold colours and thick 'fat lava' glazes. While the production of these highly collectable art ceramics ceased in the 1990s, the company successfully pivoted its manufacturing focus towards functional horticultural products. Today, the German manufacturer remains a major commercial force as Europe’s market leader for indoor and outdoor plant pots, producing tens of millions of items annually.
