Founded in 1910 in the town of Riihimäki, 70 kilometres north of Helsinki, the factory initially operated under the name Osakeyhtiö Riihimäki before officially becoming Riihimäen Lasi Oy in 1937.

Originally producing basic household items, window panes, and bottles, the company expanded its operations and acquired several smaller regional furnaces, eventually becoming Finland's largest glass manufacturer during the 20th century.

The company's most highly sought-after era spans from the 1950s through the 1970s. During this post-war period, Riihimäen Lasi Oy shifted focus toward bold, modernist art glass, heavily driven by a roster of renowned female designers. Nanny Still, Helena Tynell, and Tamara Aladin transformed the factory's output. Their designs moved away from delicate traditional crystal, instead championing heavy, mould-blown forms, geometric optical textures, and highly saturated colours.
