Marei Keramik was officially established in 1949, following the dissolution of the Fuss and Emons factory in Rheinbach. The company, formally known as Majolikafabrik Rheinbach Jean Fuss and Sohn (abbreviated to Marei), quickly became a prolific producer of household and decorative ceramics. Throughout the 1950s/60s, Marei capitalised on the post-war boom, producing bold, highly textured wares that were distributed locally and exported across Europe and North America.
Marei is perhaps best known for its experimental and vibrant decors, which perfectly encapsulate the quintessential 'Fat Lava' aesthetic of the era. Sought-after glaze lines include the intricate 'Brügge', the Mediterranean-inspired 'Capri', and the highly textured 'Kolibri', often referred to by collectors as the snakeskin glaze.
Although economic pressures and shifting interior design trends eventually led to the factory's decline towards the end of the 20th century, Marei Keramik's striking forms and bold colours remain highly collectable examples of mid-century craftsmanship.
