Curtis Jeré is the collective signature used by Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels, who established the California-based design company Artisan House in 1964. Freiler managed manufacturing while Fels directed design, combining parts of their names to create the pseudonym. They operated a studio model where a team of metalworkers reproduced the founders' original designs, allowing them to produce and distribute hand-crafted metal art to the wider retail market.
The studio produced mid-century metalwork, focusing on large-scale wall sculptures, freestanding pieces, and lighting. The works were constructed primarily from brass, copper, and steel, and manufactured using industrial techniques including torch-cutting, welding, and chemical patination. The Curtis Jeré catalogue features both abstract geometric compositions and representational subjects such as flora, fauna, and architectural motifs, which were widely distributed through furniture showrooms and department stores throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
The 'Sunset Flight' wall sculpture (often referred to as 'Birds in Flight') was produced for the Homco company, featuring in their catalogue in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Homco, full name Home Interiors & Gifts, Inc, was founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1957.
