Founded in 1414 in the town of Chřibská - originally part of Bohemia and later Czechoslovakia - the Chřibská Glassworks (full name, Sklárna Chřibská) holds the distinction of being one of the oldest recorded glass manufacturing facilities in Europe.

For centuries, the furnaces produced traditional Bohemian glass, entering a new era of commercial prominence when the Mayer family took over operations in the late 1800s. The family successfully ran the factory until the outbreak of World War II, after which the facility was nationalised by the state and absorbed into the massive Borské Sklo National Corporation.

The factory's golden age is synonymous with one name: Josef Hospodka. Serving as the head designer from 1958 to 1970, Hospodka revolutionised Chřibská's output. He embraced the mid-century modern aesthetic, shifting the focus toward heavy, monumental free-blown cased glass.
