Empoli Glass

Empoli, in Tuscany west of Florence, is associated with a glassmaking tradition that extends well beyond the colourful decorative pieces familiar to mid-century collectors. Empoli glass is a regional description, not the name of a single factory: workshops in the town and surrounding area made a varied range of practical and decorative wares.

The city's Glass Museum traces the local industry to the fifteenth century. Bottles, flasks, demijohns and table vessels played an important role in everyday life and the trade in wine and olive oil. Traditional green glass took its colour from iron oxide in the sand used in production, linking the appearance of these objects to their raw materials and local manufacturing history.

From the mid-1950s, coloured, transparent, engraved and decorated glass became another important part of the area's output. For collectors of post-war design, this includes tall decorative bottles and decanters, colourful vases and vessels with textured surfaces. The elongated forms often called 'genie bottles' are a familiar part of this collecting area, but the term describes a style of object rather than a particular manufacturer.

Regional production encompassed different methods, finishes and markets. A textured surface or a Venetian-inspired detail is not enough on its own to establish a factory attribution, and decorative Italian glass should not automatically be described as Murano simply because of its colour or shape.

Documented names associated with this collecting area include Cristalleria Artistica Toscana (C.A.T.), STELVIA Glass and Vetreria Artigiana Samminiatello (V.A.S.). Their individual collection pages offer more detailed histories and attribution notes.

Surviving labels and export records can be valuable, but an importer or distributor's label does not necessarily identify the furnace that made a piece. Where a manufacturer is uncertain, a carefully qualified regional description is more useful than an unsupported factory name.
