Founded by Eduard Bay in 1933 in Ransbach-Baumbach, West Germany, Bay Keramik began by producing unglazed terracotta tableware and cooking pots before transitioning to moulded production in 1937.
Following a brief halt during World War II, the company rapidly expanded in the 1950s and 1960s to become a leading manufacturer of West German art ceramics. During this peak period, the brand became highly regarded for its innovative glazes, vivid colours, and textured "Fat Lava" designs.
Much of this artistic success was driven by renowned designers like Bodo Mans, who created highly sought-after geometric and moulded patterns that remain prized by collectors today.
In 1970, Bay Keramik patented the Römertopf, a highly successful clay cooking pot designed to steam and braise food in its own juices. While a common myth suggests the company ceased producing art pottery in 1971 to focus entirely on the Römertopf, Bay actually continued manufacturing decorative ceramics into the early 1990s.
