Villeroy & Boch (Luxembourg) 'Cadiz'

Released in 1970, the Cadiz pattern is a key example of the company's mid-century Mediterranean-inspired tableware. Manufactured at the company's Luxembourg factory, the line remained in production until the end of 1984. The pattern was designed by Christiane Reuter, the same chief designer responsible for Villeroy & Boch’s highly successful Acapulco range.

The Cadiz pattern draws direct visual inspiration from traditional Spanish and Portuguese azulejo tiles. The design features a repeating, stylised motif of a quince and blue filigree pattern, set against a crisp white background. This graphic, two-tone decoration was applied exclusively to the 'Milano' tableware shapes, originally modelled by Ludwig Scherer.

Like many of the company’s post-war patterns, Cadiz was manufactured using their proprietary vitro-porcelain. This high-fired ceramic body was made for the modernising domestic market, providing a durable, chip-resistant finish. The commercial glaze ensured the saturated blue and yellow pigments remained stable under heavy daily use.
