Collection: Siltal (Italy)
Siltal was an Italian manufacturer based in Abbiategrasso, near Milan, whose output extended from domestic appliances to decorative enamel cookware. A local industrial history dates the company's beginnings to 1947, when Romeo Scarioni and Angelo Scaiola established a business producing gas and wood-burning cookers.
During Italy's post-war manufacturing boom, Siltal expanded into refrigerators and subsequently washing machines and dishwashers. An advertisement preserved in the Fondazione Fiera Milano archive records the company exhibiting refrigerators and cookers in 1956, placing its colourful kitchenware within a much broader tradition of Italian domestic manufacturing.
For vintage collectors, a distinctive part of Siltal's output is its enamel cookware decorated with Egyptian-inspired figures and animals. Surviving examples include stockpots, covered casseroles and saucepans, with black decorative scenes set against coloured enamel backgrounds. These pieces combine everyday kitchen forms with the bold graphic decoration associated with mid-century interiors.
The Egyptian-inspired range is commonly attributed in vintage-design listings to Carla Agnelli and associated with chef Robert Carrier. Examples from the early 1970s carry Siltal markings and month-and-year production stamps on their bases, providing useful clues when dating individual pieces.
