Glass | Italian, Murano

Murano, a series of small islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon of northern Italy, is the undisputed global capital of luxury art glass. While other regions produced beautiful commercial pieces, Murano has long been considered the absolute pinnacle of the craft.

The history of Venetian glassmaking was officially concentrated on Murano in 1291. The Venetian Republic ordered all glassmakers to move their foundries to the island to prevent fires in the city centre and to fiercely guard their lucrative glassmaking secrets. For centuries, these artisans perfected elite techniques and created delicate wares for European royalty.

However, during the post-war mid-century period, Murano experienced a spectacular, modern renaissance. Master glassblowers (known as the maestri) started to create heavy, sculptural, and vibrantly coloured centrepieces, bowls, and figurines. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, these magnificent works became the ultimate modern status symbols, exported to high-end boutiques and department stores worldwide.

Pieces from this era were completely handcrafted and varied spectacularly in shape and colour. They heavily relied on signature, labour-intensive techniques like sommerso (submerged layers of contrasting coloured glass), bullicante (controlled bubbles), and the dazzling inclusion of avventurina (copper or gold flakes).

The island hosted a vast array of kilns, ranging from historic heavyweights to more elusive mid-century studios. Notable makers whose work defines this era - which frequently feature in curated collections today - include Fratelli Toso, Formia Glass, Oball Glass, and the enigmatic Cristallo Venezia CCC.

Because many individual mid-century pieces were never physically signed by the artist, collectors today often rely on surviving paper or foil labels for authentication. Pieces may bear specific studio stickers, such as generic 'Murano Glass, Made in Italy' export labels, or the marks of major international importers who brought these Venetian masterpieces to the Western market.
