Fratelli Toso (Murano, Italy)
Founded in 1854 by six brothers united by a deep passion for the art of glassmaking, Fratelli Toso holds the prestigious title of being one of the oldest and most esteemed glass factories on the island of Murano.
With a history spanning over 150 years, the Toso family has continuously refined their techniques, earning numerous accolades and establishing themselves as true pioneers of Venetian glass. While their historic output encompasses a diverse range of creations - from magnificent, elaborate chandeliers to delightful decorative souvenirs - they are perhaps most legendary in the vintage community for their absolute mastery of millefiori (thousand flowers) and intricate murrine work.
During the mid-century period, Fratelli Toso brilliantly adapted these ancient, labour-intensive techniques to suit modern tastes. They produced highly sought-after vases, bowls, and paperweights featuring vibrant, tightly packed floral murrine, striking starburst patterns, and bold geometric designs that perfectly captured the colourful aesthetic of the 1960s and 1970s.
A true testament to their enduring craftsmanship and legacy, the company is still in operation today, continuing a multi-generational dedication to the art of Murano glass.
