Founded in 1414 in the town of Chřibská - originally part of Bohemia and later Czechoslovakia - the Chřibská Glassworks (full name, Sklárna Chřibská) holds the incredible distinction of being one of the oldest recorded glass manufacturing facilities in Europe. For centuries, the furnaces produced traditional Bohemian glass, entering a new era of commercial prominence when the Mayer family took over operations in the late 1800s. The family successfully ran the factory until the outbreak of World War II, after which the facility was nationalised by the state and absorbed into the massive Borské Sklo National Corporation.

The factory's absolute golden age is entirely synonymous with one legendary name: Josef Hospodka. Serving as the head designer from 1958 to 1970, Hospodka completely revolutionised Chřibská's output. He embraced the mid-century modern aesthetic, shifting the focus toward heavy, monumental free-blown and cased glass. Today, collectors actively hunt for his highly recognisable, organic, and sculptural bowls and vases, which frequently feature vibrant, contrasting layers of pinks, greens, and blues cased in thick, polished clear glass.

Hospodka's magnificent designs were so globally popular that they remained in continuous production for decades. Although he left the company in the early 1970s, he made a celebrated return to the company in 1985, designing until his death in 1989. While the historic factory ultimately closed its doors in 2007 - ending nearly six centuries of continuous European glassmaking - Hospodka's spectacular forms ensure that the Chřibská legacy remains a highly prized staple in modern vintage collections.
