Rosenthal was founded in 1879 by Philipp Rosenthal, who moved his porcelain painting business from Werl in North Rhine-Westphalia to Selb in Bavaria, where he was based in the castle Erkersreuth.

In 1960, the Rosenthal Studiohaus was opened in Nuremberg. Across the mid-century period a number of key designers worked with the company to create designs, including Tapio Wirkkala (1915-85), Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006), Bjørn Wiinblad (1919-2006) and Renate Rhein (1925-2020).
