Belart Inc. was located in Mendota, Minnesota and was founded in 1962 by Harold Nielson, as a division of Foldcraft Co., a fast food restaurant seating manufacturer that still exists today.
During the 1960s, Belart Inc. was famous for its mass-produced, mid-century still-life wall plaques. These often featured walnut or teak wood in tear-drop or surfboard shapes, embellished with colourful melted plastic chips, a style commonly referred to as "popcorn" art. Popular subjects included matadors, fruit, wine bottles, and animal figures.
The company went out of business around 1989 due to overseas competition, but their distinctive plaques remain popular among MCM collectors and vintage enthusiasts today.
