Wedgwood (England) 'Pennine'
Introduced in 1965 the Pennine pattern is very different from the formal bone china the brand was traditionally known for. Designed by the company’s chief modeller, Eric Owen, the range was conceived during a time when mid-century homes were rapidly modernising and seeking more relaxed, casual dining options. Marketed in the 1960s as 'The Shape for Modern Living,' Pennine captured the era's growing appreciation for earthy, rustic tones and highly tactile surfaces.
The most defining feature of Pennine is its rich earthy brown glaze and highly textured, embossed borders. Owen designed the tableware with a distinctive, geometric relief pattern that heavily mimics the organic, overlapping scales of a pinecone. This stylised, repeating motif highlights the deep chestnut tones of the glaze, giving the collection a charm that feels just as relevant on a modern table today as it did in the 1960s.
Beyond its mid-century aesthetic, the Pennine range was engineered for durability. Moving away from fragile porcelain, Wedgwood crafted these pieces as heavy-duty oven-to-table ware. Owen designed the collection to eliminate weak spots, creating silhouettes with shortened, sturdy spouts and thickened handles to increase resistance to chipping during everyday domestic use.

Collector's Authentication Guide
The 'Cotswold' Shape
For collectors, they may be interested to note that the physical shape of this tableware is officially recorded in the Wedgwood archives as the 'Cotswold' shape.
The 'Cambrian' Sister Pattern
Because the physical 'Cotswold' shape was so highly successful, Wedgwood also produced a sister colourway. If you find these exact same pinecone-embossed shapes finished in a muted sage green glaze rather than the traditional brown, you have found the Cambrian pattern.
The Oven-to-Table Backstamp
Unlike their antique wares, Wedgwood stamped the undersides of the Pennine range to highlight its modern functionality. Pieces will typically feature a clear, printed or impressed Wedgwood backstamp.
