Following the Second World War, Japan's manufacturing sector underwent a period of rapid industrial expansion. During the 1960s and 1970s, domestic glass furnaces shifted their primary focus from utilitarian household items, to producing highly decorative art glass, targeted at the booming Western export market. This era established Japan as a dominant force in global mid-century glassware production, allowing them to directly compete with the established European glasshouses of the period.

The main aesthetic of Japanese mid-century glass is characterised by heavy, thick-walled forms and the extensive use of cased glass techniques. Japanese artisans encased brightly coloured glass forms within thick, clear exterior layers. The pieces were frequently hand-pulled, twisted, and manipulated into asymmetrical, organic shapes, resulting in weighty objects that relied on dense colour layering and optical distortion rather than delicate, traditional cutting.

Several major furnaces drove this national export success, each developing distinct, identifiable production lines: 

Iwatsu Glass became recognised for its 'Hineri' and 'Art Glass' ranges, which featured thick, twisting, lobed forms and prominently pulled rims. Sanyu Glass gained commercial prominence with its Narumi 'Fantasy' line, featuring multi-layered colour suspensions. Other significant contributors to the era include Hokuyo Glass, Multi Glass, and Tajima Glass, which produced a vast array of coloured vases and sculptural centrepieces.

Unlike glass exported from European glass manufacturers, pieces weren't signed, engraved, or acid-stamped by the manufacturer. Instead, furnaces relied entirely on foil or paper labels to identify the maker and country of origin.

Over decades of domestic use, these paper labels frequently washed or peeled away, leading to modern categorisation challenges where high-quality, unmarked Japanese mid-century glass is routinely misidentified by sellers as Italian Murano glass.
