Produced by the Joetsu Crystal Glass Company, Kurata Glass (often branded Kurata Craft Glass) represents the premium art glass line of one of Japan's most enduring furnaces. Founded in 1905 by Masaru Kurata in the Gunma Prefecture, the company is a notable exception to the post-war trend of factory closures, remaining actively operated by the Kurata family today. While JCGC maintains a strong domestic presence under its own name, the kiln's mid-century commercial expansion was heavily driven by international distribution, solidifying its presence in the global art glass market.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Joetsu was contracted by major Western distributors, most notably the American tableware brand Mikasa, to manufacture large quantities of both pressed and free-form art glass. Because these export pieces were distributed with temporary foil labels that frequently degraded over time, attribution of unmarked Kurata glass relies heavily on physical manufacturing traits.
