William Harry Grindley and Alfred Meakin established the W. H. Grindley & Company in 1880. When Alfred Meakin left in 1884, William became sole proprietor.

Grindley began producing ceramics at the Newfield Pottery in Tunstall in Stoke-on-Trent, England. In 1891, the company expanded and moved to the Woodfield Pottery, also in Tunstall.

The company manufactured a wide range of earthenware and ironstone pieces with the express intention of exporting to the USA, South America, Canada, and Australia
