Henning Rathjen (1903-68) was one of the Australian-born artists who established a new pottery studio to cater for local demand and post-war innovations in art pottery. Rathjen established his pottery studio in Melbourne in 1948, producing quality slip-cast wares over the next 20 years.

Rathjen's production moved away from the standard 1940s designs, with applied flowers or incised designs and textured surfaces, as he gradually developed unusual shapes, different glazes and contrasting, flamboyantly coloured glazes. He sold his pottery studio in 1968, just before his unexpected death a few months later.

THIS LISTING

A fabulous table lamp in a fabulous decor - an olive green ceramic base, clearly inspired by a flower bud, paired with Tasmanian blackwood for the base and neck.

This fantastic -and fairly hard to find- piece has been paired with a hand-made lamp shade made out of vintage fabric, courtesy of our friends at Retrotastik.

The lamp base is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or any other flaws to mention. Some light crazing in the ceramic, that we often see with these, but minimal. The blackwood has had a clean and polish and is also in excellent condition.

Please note the lamp shade may have some inconsistencies in the pattern and fabric itself being vintage, however it is free from damage.

This beauty measures 72cm (28") tall including the shade, 38m tall not including the shade or light fixture.

It has been professionally rewired with a new cable to meet Australian electrical standards. Essentially, it's all ready to go!
