Carstens Tönnieshof (Germany)

Carstens Tönnieshof was a German ceramics manufacturer based at Fredelsloh in Lower Saxony. Its post-war story began with Ernst Carstens’s preparations for a new factory in 1945, followed by production in 1947. The enterprise drew on an older Carstens ceramics business, but the Tönnieshof factory belongs specifically to the rebuilding and expansion of the West German pottery industry after the Second World War.

Trude Carstens played an important role in shaping the early range. Her designs contributed to a catalogue that included practical household ceramics, decorative vessels and animal figures. Rather than following a single recognisable form, the factory developed a broad repertoire, giving collectors a wide variety of shapes and surface treatments to explore.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Carstens became associated with the expressive glazes now frequently grouped under the collector term Fat Lava. These textured and often strongly coloured finishes formed only part of its output, however, and should not be treated as the definition of every Carstens piece. After Trude Carstens’s death in 1965, Rudolf Christmann took over as artistic director.

The factory’s reach extended beyond its own German production. Local historical research records licensing and advisory agreements with companies in Austria, Chile, Argentina and Australia, illustrating its wider commercial connections without making every related piece a Fredelsloh-made object. Production at Carstens ended in 1984. Surviving marks, model references and documented glaze combinations remain more useful for identifying individual wares than a general resemblance to West German pottery.

Read more in the Fredelsloh village archive, its account of the factory’s expansion and Store norske leksikon.

Pattern Malmö
Production 1960s/70s

Model #1252-23, Vase
Colour Aubergine, Dark Brown

Dimensions 23cm (9.5") tall

Condition Excellent condition with no wear that we can see.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0405/5839/5559/files/temp_20a2e922-3201-4aed-b8e2-ce4230483dde.jpg?v=1785476655
carstens-tonnieshof-west-germany-vase-in-tan-orange-model-7608-20
Carstens Tönnieshof (West Germany) Vase, in Tan/Orange | Model #7608-20

Production 1960s/70s

Model #7608-20, Vase
Colour Tan, with Orange and Red

Dimensions 20cm (8") tall

Condition Excellent condition with no wear that we can see.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0405/5839/5559/files/temp_84e3e282-df15-40c3-be24-189714d98ad1.png?v=1792303534
