Archimede Seguso (Murano, Italy)

Archimede Seguso was a Murano master glassmaker, designer and entrepreneur whose work combined sculptural invention with a deep knowledge of Venetian glassmaking traditions. Trained alongside his father Antonio, he developed the ability to move between substantial solid-glass forms and exceptionally delicate blown glass, making technical experimentation central to his work.

His early career included work at Barovier and the family enterprise Seguso Vetri d’Arte. In 1946, he established his own independent glassworks, Vetreria Artistica Archimede Seguso, giving him the freedom to develop his own designs and direct their execution at the furnace. This workshop should be distinguished from Seguso Vetri d’Arte, the earlier firm with which he had been associated.

Seguso played an important part in the twentieth-century reinterpretation of historic Venetian techniques. He explored filigrana, using fine glass threads to create intricate patterns within blown glass. His lace-like Merletti and the Piume series became important expressions of this approach during the 1950s, alongside coral-coloured and gold-decorated glass. These works reveal a different side of his practice from the thick, solid sculptures also associated with his name.

During the 1960s, his experimentation extended to strongly coloured glass with overlapping bands, continuous coils, star-like filigree and optical effects. Across these different approaches, the emphasis was not simply on surface decoration: colour and pattern became part of the structure of the object, demonstrating the close relationship between design and furnace skill in Murano production.

The glassworks also developed a close relationship with Tiffany & Co. from the early 1960s, collaborating with figures including Van Day Truex and Charles Lin Tissot. In 1982, Elsa Peretti sought Seguso’s collaboration when she began designing tableware. A retrospective at Tiffany’s New York premises in 1989, titled Il Maestro dei Maestri, recognised the breadth of his achievement.

The next generation became part of the workshop’s history: his son Gino joined in 1959, followed by Giampaolo in 1964 and grandson Antonio in 1985. Family involvement continued beyond Archimede’s lifetime. His legacy encompasses both the renewal of traditional Venetian glassmaking and a distinctly individual body of work, from refined patterned vessels to lamps and sculpture.

Read more about the glassworks in the British Museum’s account here, explore Fondazione CFC’s artist biography here, and consult the glass identification guide here.

Model 7.5" Swan
Colour Alabastro Green

Production 1950s/60s

Dimensions 19cm (7.5") tall, 21cm (8.5") long, 9cm (4") wide

Condition Excellent condition with no wear that we can see.

Alabastro -
